Suggestions for students and Parents
You are your best advocate! College is a great time to learn how to speak up for yourself and build confidence in navigating your education.
- Some accommodations require extra time to arrange, so self-identifying and requesting them as early as possible is important.
- Attend all classes and follow the instructions in each syllabus regarding absences, emergencies, or class-specific requirements. If you know you鈥檒l miss a class, inform your instructor ahead of time whenever possible.
- Reach out to outside agencies to check if you may qualify for additional services. If personal attendants are needed, arrange them independently (whether through family or an agency), as colleges are not required under ADA to provide personal attendants, tutors, or personal items like hearing aids, prostheses, or assistive devices.
- Students with disabilities should process their own college business 鈥 registration, drop/add, refunds, and more.
