Three returning members of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Board of Trustees were sworn in for new four-year terms during the board’s August 13 meeting, while trustees also elected new leadership.
Judge Ellen Shelley administered the Oath of Office to Brenda Vaughn, Garland Norton and Gary Stroud. All three trustees were re-appointed to the board for terms extending from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2030.
Vaughn was re-appointed by the McDowell County Board of Commissioners. Norton was re-appointed by the Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives, and Stroud was re-appointed by the President Pro Tempore of the North Carolina Senate.
“We are very fortunate to have Brenda, Garland and Gary continuing their service to Â鶹ÊÓƵ and to the people of McDowell County,” said Dr. J.W. Kelley, President of the College. “Each brings valuable experience, perspective and a strong commitment to our students and community. Their willingness to continue serving provides both continuity and thoughtful leadership as we move forward with the 2026-30 Strategic Plan (https://mcdowelltech.edu/mission-values-goals).”
Trustees also unanimously elected William Kehler to serve as chair of the Board of Trustees for the 2026-27 academic year. Kehler has served on the board while also holding leadership responsibilities with McDowell County Emergency Services and county government.
Kay Medford was elected vice chair, and Kelley was elected board secretary.
“I appreciate the confidence this group has placed in me, and I will do my very best,” Kehler told fellow trustees following his election. He emphasized the board’s focus on the students and community the college serves and the importance of education in changing lives and strengthening future generations.
